Description

Experience rich cocoa layers, velvety fudge frosting, and luscious ganache drips in this decadent chocolate cake. Perfect for special occasions or chocolate cravings, it’s moist, aromatic, and irresistibly indulgent.

Ingredients

Scale

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
1½ teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 cup whole milk
½ cup oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup hot coffee or hot water
1 cup butter, softened
¾ cup cocoa powder
3½ cups powdered sugar
½ cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
4 oz melted semi-sweet chocolate
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
½ cup heavy cream

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C)
Grease and line two or three 8-inch round cake pans
Whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl
Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla; beat until smooth
Slowly stir in hot coffee or water (batter will be thin)
Divide batter evenly between pans
Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean
Cool in pans 10 minutes, then transfer to racks to cool completely
Beat softened butter until creamy
Add cocoa powder and mix well
Gradually beat in powdered sugar, alternating with heavy cream
Mix in vanilla, salt, and melted chocolate until thick and fluffy
Add more cream if needed for spreadable texture
Place one cake layer on a plate and spread fudge frosting on top
Repeat with remaining layers, then frost the top and sides
Chill for 20–30 minutes to set
Heat heavy cream until steaming, pour over chocolate chips, let sit 2 minutes
Stir until smooth and pour ganache over the cooled cake

Notes

Use hot water instead of coffee for a non-alcohol-friendly version
Chilling the cake sets the frosting for easier ganache application
Non-dairy alternatives like oil-based ganache can replace heavy cream if needed
