Ingredients

Chocolate Cake

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup canola oil
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour 230 grams, fluffed and leveled
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup hot coffee or water

Chocolate Pudding

  • 2 boxes instant chocolate pudding mix 4-serving size
  • 3 ½ cups milk

Whipped Cream

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • ¼ cup powdered icing sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional Toppings

  • Crushed Oreos
  • Crushed Heath or Skor bars
  • Maltesers or Whoppers
  • Chocolate sauce or shavings

Instructions

Prepare the Chocolate Cake

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Lightly grease and flour a 9x13-inch pan, tapping out excess flour.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together sugar and oil until combined.
  • Add milk, eggs, and vanilla, whisking until smooth.
  • Stir in flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, salt, and baking powder, mixing until just combined.
  • Gradually add hot coffee (or water), stirring until the batter is smooth and thin.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20–22 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely (overnight works best).
  • Once cooled, cut the cake into 1-inch cubes.

Prepare the Chocolate Pudding and Whipped Cream

  • For the pudding, whisk together the pudding mix and milk until smooth.
  • In a separate bowl, whip the cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until stiff peaks form.

Assemble the Trifle

  • Layer half the cake cubes in a trifle dish or large glass bowl.
  • Add half the pudding, then half the whipped cream.
  • Sprinkle desired toppings.
  • Repeat layers with remaining ingredients.
  • Refrigerate until ready to serve. Best enjoyed the same day for freshest texture.

Notes

Substitute hot coffee with hot water if preferred, but coffee enhances the chocolate flavor. For a quicker version, use store-bought chocolate cake or brownies. Swap heavy cream with Cool Whip, but note it affects freshness time.
