Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Optional Additions & Substitutions

  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips Stir in for extra chocolate flavor.
  • Gluten-free Swap all-purpose flour with a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
  • Dairy-free Use plant-based butter and ensure cocoa powder is dairy-free.

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a standard cake pan.
  • In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet batter until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  • Pour half of the batter into another bowl and stir in the vanilla extract for the vanilla portion.
  • Layer the chocolate and vanilla batters into the prepared pan in dollops, then gently swirl with a knife for a marbled effect.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

For even baking, ensure all ingredients are at room temperature. Don’t over-swirl the batter—just a few gentle zigzags are enough for distinct marbling.
