Cake
- 4 medium eggs, at room temperature Room-temperature eggs blend more smoothly, creating a lighter cake texture.
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup milk
- 2 heaping tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 packet (about 10–15 g) baking powder
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour Substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend if needed.
Chocolate Soaking Sauce
- 3 cups milk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 100 g chocolate (milk or dark), chopped For a richer taste, opt for dark chocolate in the soaking sauce.
Bake the Cake
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
Beat the eggs and sugar until pale, thick, and fluffy.
Add the oil and milk, mixing briefly until combined.
Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder.
Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture using a spatula, avoiding overmixing.
Pour the batter into a greased 30 × 22 cm baking dish.
Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Prepare the Sauce
Combine milk, oil, sugar, and cocoa powder in a saucepan.
Stir constantly over medium heat until it just begins to boil.
Remove from heat and divide the sauce into two equal portions.
Leave one portion plain to cool.
Add chopped chocolate to the second portion while hot, stirring until melted. Let it cool to thicken.
Assemble
Let the baked cake cool for 20 minutes.
Cut into serving squares.
Slowly pour the plain cocoa sauce evenly over the cake.
Wait 10 minutes for absorption.
Pour the chocolate sauce over the cake, reserving some for serving if desired.
Let the cake rest for at least 2 hours before serving.
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
- Overmixing the batter, which can make the cake dense.
- Pouring the sauce while the cake is too hot, causing it to break apart.
- Skipping the resting time, which allows the flavors to develop fully.
Storage Tips:
- Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
- Freeze individual slices for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
- Reheat briefly in the microwave for a warm, gooey treat.
